The city has 3 million inhabitants, 60% under 30, and straddles Europe and the Middle East. Modern Ankara’s cityscape, lifestyle and identity have been shaped by different influences. Its animated past has left some worthy traces in the form of ancient temples and mosques from Roman, Persian and Arab times. For many Turks Kemal Atatürk’s Mausoleum is the landmark of the city and also a place of pilgrimage. In 1923 he made Ankara the capital of Turkey instead of Istanbul.
